1. Plot (synopsis)

We are in the occupied France during the Second World War. The German 'Wehrmacht' has arrested thirty-two French citizens as hostages in order to serve the Germans as a protection from expected attacks or acts of sabotage by the French Resistance.

When several German soldiers are killed the order is issued to shoot one of ten hostages. The prisoners agree upon drawing lots. The last lot falls on Louis Chavel, a wealthy lawyer.

But unlike his fellow-prisoners Chavel is not able to meet death coolly, and therefore offers his house in Brinac and all his possessions to the man who will be ready to face the firing squad in his place...
